Rufus was 50 years old, who was living alone in his modest life with his wife. Some things never changed, as his relationship with his stepdaughter, Sally. He didn’t hear anything from her for more than a year.
After Rufus married Sally’s mother, Jess, she never tried to fit in. She moved away and kept her distance.
Out of the blue, one day Sally called Rufus and invited him to a dinner. As Rufus was shocked, he was happy that Sally called him and wanted to grab a dinner with him. As he always wanted to be a real family, he accepted directly.
Then they went to a luxury restaurant, which it was clearly expensive. They sat on a table and wait for the order food. They had a small talk about their daily lives and things.
After they ordered food, Rufus noticed that Sally was nervous. She would check her phone occasionally and give short answers.
As the bill came, Sally whispered something into the waitress’ ear and excused herself to the restroom while Rufus was about to pay for their dinner.
As he waited for a while, he thought that Sally left him with the bill. He paid the enormous bill, which was higher than what he expected. As he was about to leave with sadness, he heard Sally’s voice.
She was holding a big cake and balloons. She was smiling from ear to ear, then she yelled, “”You’re gonna be a granddad!”
“A granddad?” Rufus said, as he was frozen with shock. He couldn’t move for a while.
Sally then approached to him with the cake, where there was a writing on it as “Congrats, Grandpa!”
Sally told him that she wanted to surprise him, and she manage it too. She explained that she was working with the waitress, and promised that she wasn’t going to ditch him. She was working for her surprise.
“You did all this for me?” Rufus said, as he was holding his tears back. She apologized for not being close to him, but that was just how she was. She wanted Rufus to be a part of her baby, as the granddad.
“I just wanted you to know that I want you in our lives. My life. And the baby’s life.”
